A Dermal Piercing or Micro Dermal is a single-point surface piercing. Unlike traditional piercings (which
have separate entry and exit points) a Dermal Piercing involves anchoring the jewelry beneath the skin. This allows
the jewelry to lay flat against the skin.
After cleaning and prepping the area a Piercer will create an incision and make a pocket. The anchor is
then inserted into the pocket with dermal forceps. Once the anchor is secure, the jewelry is inserted to the anchor
giving a flat to skin effect.
Dermal Piercings can be placed almost anywhere on the body. Popular areas are the cheekbone, chest,
collarbone, and lower back.
A dermal piercing is a temporary/ long term piercing depending on how the body reacts. Over time, the
body can begin to reject or push the jewelry out similar to a splinter. With proper care dermal piercings typically
heal within 6 months and can last years.
Caring for a dermal piercing is easy but must be consistent. In the shower, allow the warm water to gently
clean the area for 30 seconds. Allow the water to remove any blood or “crusties” that may have formed (this is a
normal part of the healing process). Spray the area with piercing saline solution twice a day and gently dab with a
gauze pad to dry. Avoid using any other cleansing products as they can dry out the area. Avoid tight clothing that
can rub against the piercing and be mindful to avoid bumping or snagging the area.
If you think your dermal piercing is rejecting or if you are having any issues with your dermal piercing,
you should go see your Piercer as soon as possible.
